Alice is an eighteen-year-old student and aspiring novelist with green spiky hair, a child of the modern age who recoils at the idea of reading Jane Austen. In a sequence of letters reminiscent of Jane Austen's to her own neice, 'aunt' Fay examines the rewards of such study. Not only is her correspondence a revealing tribute to a great writer - it is also an original and rewarding exploration of the craft of fiction itself.

Fay Weldon is a well-known novelist, playwright, critic and scriptwriter. Her first novel, A Fat Woman s Joke, was published in 1967 and she has written 37 novels since, including the widely acclaimed and best-selling The Life and Loves of a She-Devil, which has been adapted for screen, television and radio. She has also written seven collections of short stories and several works of non-fiction, including her autobiography Auto Da Fay and Letters to Alice: On First Reading Jane Austen. Appointed a CBE in 2001, she has been a Professor of Creative Writing at Bath Spa University since 2012.
