Bram Deagan dreams of bringing his family from Ireland to join him in Australia, where he now has a successful trading business. In particular he misses his siblings and his young aunt Maura - only two years older than himself - to whom he was once very close. But Maura is now living in England, following her own ambition to become a housekeeper in a large country estate. That is, until a typhus epidemic strikes Ireland, leaving her family decimated. With other family members scattered round the world, there is only her left to look after her orphaned nieces and nephew. She has no income if she can't work, so her only hope is for them all to join Bram in far away Australia. She's not even sure she wants to be a mother to three young, children. It is only when a storm throws her and fellow passenger Hugh Beaufort together, that she begins to realise that there may be a chance for her to pursue dreams of her own once again, dreams she had set aside long ago ...
