Malacarne is a stark portrait of the Mafia and its organization: the Cosa Nostra, the Ndrangheta, and the Camorra. Photographer Alberto Giuliani s images convey the influence of the Mafia on the life and culture of the people in the different regions of Italy, These are exclusive, authentic, unsparing photographs. Murder weapons and scenes, the hunters and the hunted, bosses and victims, burials and drug dealings, the concealed and the search operation: Giuliani s photos depict the land of the Mafia as archaic, illuminating the cultural backstory. No less a figure than bestselling author and Mafia expert Roberto Saviano (Gomorra, 3 million sold copies) assisted and advised Giuliani on this project. Malacarne speaks of a country at war.
About the Author
Alberto Giuliani was born in Italy in 1975. His pictures speak of momentous events of our time, but his way of representing reality has often transcended the boundaries of printed paper, thus assuming the qualities of a work of music, theatre, or narrative. Since early 2007, he has focused his full attention on the Italian Mafia for a project titled Married to the Mob. Malacarne is based on the work in progress, as Giuliani impresses upon us the acute topicality of this complex and dangerous phenomenon through the works he has created to date. This work has already won a number of international awards, including the LEICA Award for Photojournalism in 2010.
