An accessible and essential introduction to the history of the Arab world for the general reader, covering fourteen centuries of Arab history, from the rise of Islam to the Arab Spring. Includes an exhaustive suggested further reading list, bibliography, index and nine maps.

After studying Arabic and Islamic studies at Oxford University and the American University in Cairo in the early 1970s, John McHugo s career as an international lawyer took him to a number of Arab countries including Egypt, Oman and Bahrain over a period of more than a quarter of a century. He is an honorary Senior Fellow at the Centre for Syrian Studies at St Andrews, and a board member of the Council for Arab-British Understanding (CAABU) and the British Egyptian Society. He has also written on legal aspects of the Arab-Israeli dispute and advised Tim Farron, when he was leader of the Liberal Democrats, on Palestinian issues. His other publications include the critically acclaimed A Concise History of the Arabs and Syria: A Recent History. www.johnmchugo.com
