Marcus Chown explores the way that the mathematical equations of physics led us to foresee the existence of previously unknown things, and then to verify that they are real. His nine case studies include Le Verrier ‘finding†Neptune, Maxwellâ€s electromagnetic waves and Diracâ€s anti-particles, as well as Fred Hoyleâ€s less well-known suggestion that stars create carbon.
