India s growing influence has led experts to predict a major re- armament effort. The second-most populous nation in the world is beginning to wield the economic power expected of such a behemoth. However, its relations with Pakistan remain tense, the subcontinent remains vulnerable to religious extremism, and a military rivalry with China could erupt in the future. About the Author

Stephen P. Cohen is a senior fellow in the Foreign Policy program at the Brookings Institution. Long considered one of America s premier experts on South Asia, he is the author of numerous books, including Brookings titles India: Emerging Power and The Idea of Pakistan, and he is the lead author of 2011 s The Future of Pakistan (also Brookings). Sunil Dasgupta is director of the University of Maryland Baltimore County s Political Science Program at Shady Grove and is also a nonresident fellow in Foreign Policy with the Brookings Institution. He was previously a senior correspondent for India Today.
