Spanning over 500 years, Pura Belpré Award-winner, Ruth Behar's, epic novel tells the stories of four girls from different generations of a Jewish family, many of them forced to leave their country and start a new life.
In 1492, during the Spanish Inquisition, Benvenida and her family are banished from Spain for being Jewish, and must flee the country or be killed. They journey by foot and by sea, eventually settling in Istanbul. Over four centuries later, in 1923, shortly after the Turkish war of independence, Reina’s father disowns her for a small act of disobedience. He ships her away to live with an aunt in Cuba, to be wed in an arranged marriage when she turns fifteen.
In 1961, Reina’s daughter, Alegra, is proud to be a brigadista, teaching literacy in the countryside for Fidel Castro. But soon Castro’s crackdowns force her to flee to Miami all alone, leaving her parents behind.
Finally, in 2003, Alegra’s daughter, Paloma, is excited to travel from her home in Miami to visit Spain with her parents and Grandma Reina. In a museum there, she sees a note preserved from the Middle Ages that, unbeknownst to her, was written by her ancestor Benvenida just before she fled the country. Though many years and many seas separate these girls, they are united by their desire to learn and their longing for a home where they will be welcome.

Ruth Behar es una aclamada autora de ficción y no ficción para adultos. Lucky Broken Girl (Mi buena mala suerte), su primer libro para lectores jóvenes, fue ganador del premio Pura Belpré. También es la autora de Letters from Cuba (Cartas de Cuba), una novela inspirada por la historia de su abuela materna. Ruth nació en La Habana, Cuba, creció en Nueva York y también ha vivido y trabajado en España y México. Sus distinciones incluyen un premio MacArthur “Genius”, una beca John Simon Guggenheim, una beca Fulbright Senior y un premio Distinguished Alumna de la Universidad de Wesleyan.
Ruth Behar is an acclaimed author of adult fiction and nonfiction, and Lucky Broken Girl - winner of the Pura Belpre Award -- is her first book for young readers. She was born in Havana, Cuba, grew up in New York, and has also lived and worked in Spain and Mexico. Her honors include a MacArthur "Genius" Award, a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, a Fulbright Senior Fellowship, and a Distinguished Alumna Award from Wesleyan University.
Devon Holzwarth es ilustradora y escritora de libros ilustrados llenos de calidez y encanto. Creció en Panamá, con la selva como su jardín y con loros e iguanas de mascotas. Los recuerdos de su infancia y su colección de libros antiguos para niños le sirven de mucha inspiración. Devon obtuvo su BFA en 2000 de la Escuela de Diseño de Rhode Island, con una especialidad en serigrafía y pintura. Devon Holzwarth is an illustrator and writer of picture books full of warmth and charm. She grew up in Panama with the jungle as her garden and parrots and iguanas as pets. Childhood memories and her collection of vintage children's books strongly inspire her work. Devon earned her BFA in 2000 from the Rhode Island School of Design focusing on screen printing and painting and afterwards lived in California painting murals around the Bay Area, and working for a children's publication. After having two children and moving to Germany, Devon discovered she was an illustrator and had stories to tell. She currently lives in Aachen with her husband, kids, and beloved old hound dog.
