Desde tres ángulos distintos –tres “testimonios”--, un igual número de obsesivos personajes trata de recuperar, en un intento por descargar sus conciencias, el recuerdo de Mariana, quien ha desaparecido de sus vidas sumergiéndose y evadiéndose, alternativamente, en y de conflictos existenciales y eróticos, agobiada por las persecuciones y los acosos de que la hacen víctima su esposo Augusto y el séquito de aduladores que lo rodean.

Esta novela de tintes autobiográficos, que Elena Garro confirmó solo a medias, convencida de que la ficción es siempre alimentada por la vida, arroja muchas luces sobre la identidad de su autora en relación con la época convulsa en la que se desenvolvió.

From three different perspectives (the three “testimonies”), an equal number of obsessive characters try to recapture the memory of Mariana in an attempt to ease their conscience. Mariana is gone from their lives, plunging into or evading existential and erotic conflicts, overwhelmed by the stalking and harassment she is subjected to by her husband, Augusto, and the entourage of sycophants surrounding him.

This semi-autobiographical novel, something Elena Garro only confirmed vaguely, convinced that fiction is always nurtured by life, sheds light on the author’s intimacy, regarding the turbulent time she live in.

About the Author

Elena Garro (1916–1998) es una de las escritoras mexicanas más reconocidas de todos los tiempos. Fue periodista, dramaturga, cuentista y novelista. Entre sus obras más conocidas están la novela Los recuerdos del porvenir, el libro de cuentos La semana de colores y la obra teatral Un hogar sólido. Recibió los premios Xavier Villaurrutia (1963), por Los recuerdos del porvenir (Grijalbo 1981), por Testimonios sobre Mariana, el Bellas Artes de Narrativa y el Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1996).
