When Eve Taylor sets off for a new life in Cardiff leaving her teenage daughter behind her in Liverpool, Rita Taylor has little choice but go and live with the aunt she never knew she had. Grudgingly Margaret Sinclair, the local pawnbroker, agrees to look after her wayward niece. Despite their initial battle of wills the pair soon become firm friends especially when Rita re-introduces Maggie to her childhood sweetheart William Brodie. As the Great Depression hits the Brodie family find themselves facing financial ruin, so Maggie agrees to take over their debt staving off the bailiffs for a while. But revelations about the past soon make it difficult for Maggie to deal with William and the business relationship turns sour. Meanwhile Rita is having problems of her own with the younger Brodie brothers and it looks as though she is going to make the same mistake as her aunt once did. A change of heart is needed from both women to stop history repeating itself all over again...
